The Teachers and Educational Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC) has commenced a nationwide strike today, November 18, 2024, in protest against the government’s prolonged delays in addressing critical issues regarding their conditions of service.
TEWU-TUC members, including staff under the Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana Library Authority, Museums and Monuments Board, and Public Technical and Traditional Universities, have expressed frustration over stalled negotiations that have spanned several years. The union cites the government’s failure to conclude, sign, and implement revised conditions of service agreements as the main reason for their action.
The strike has raised concerns about potential disruptions in Ghana’s education sector, especially as it affects admission processes for first-year students in public institutions. The union has described the delays as unacceptable, noting that their members’ patience has run out.
In response, the National Labour Commission (NLC) has summoned TEWU-TUC and other stakeholders to a meeting scheduled for Wednesday, November 20, 2024. The NLC aims to resolve the impasse and prevent further escalation.
As the strike unfolds, stakeholders in the education sector are anxiously awaiting the outcome of Wednesday’s meeting, which will determine the next steps toward resolving the issues at hand.
