Police Nab Suspects in Multi-Regional Vehicle Theft Case
On April 30, 2025, the Eastern North Regional Police Command arrested three suspects involved in the theft of a Hyundai Santa Fe, registration GG 2–18, stolen from a washing bay in Kuntunse Satellite, Accra, on April 24. The arrests show how the growing issues of vehicle theft have become, particularly in Accra.
Two of the suspects, Kwabena Tawiah and Kwadwo Asiedu, were apprehended at a hotel in Nkawkaw, Eastern Region, while the third, Dennis Debra, alias “Kapun,” was arrested in Pemenase, Ashanti Region, for receiving the stolen vehicle. This multi-regional operation reveals the coordinated nature of such crimes, often spanning different parts of the country.
Vehicle theft has been on the rise in Ghana, with a 2023 Ghana Police Service report noting a 12% increase in car thefts. Washing bays, like the one in Kuntunse, are particularly vulnerable due to lax security measures, making them easy targets for criminals exploiting these gaps.
Lately, Ghana Police has been putting in great efforts to combat organized crime, but they also point to broader challenges. Criminal networks in Ghana often operate across regions, as noted in the Global Organized Crime Index, with foreign actors also involved in illicit activities, further complicating law enforcement efforts.
This case serves as a reminder for vehicle owners to remain vigilant, especially in public spaces like washing bays, and for authorities to strengthen security measures to curb the rising tide of vehicle thefts in the country.
