Three Women Arrested at Kotoka Airport for 16kg Methamphetamine Possession
An Accra High Court has remanded two South African women and a Nigerian woman into custody after they were caught with over 16 kilograms of methamphetamine at Kotoka International Airport (KIA). Officials from the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) apprehended the suspects on January 20, 2025, after discovering the drugs concealed in two identical suitcases.
Presiding over the case, Justice Mrs. Kizita Koowa Quarshie ordered the accused to remain in custody until their next court appearance on February 11, 2025. The court did not take their pleas, as formal charges and facts were yet to be read. The judge also instructed them to secure legal representation for their defense.
Senior State Attorney Mr. Watkins Adamah requested the remand, citing the need for further investigations. He explained that the South African suspects had traveled through Rwanda before arriving in Ghana, where they were found in possession of the narcotic substances. A controlled delivery operation led to the arrest of the Nigerian suspect, who had allegedly traveled from Nigeria to swap suitcases containing the drugs.
Authorities are now conducting further investigations to identify other individuals linked to the case. The Ghana Standards Authority will also analyze the seized substances to confirm their composition.
The accused remain in custody as the court continues proceedings on this high-profile drug trafficking case.
