TikTok Teams Up with Ghana for Safety and Coding

TikTok has pledged to work with Ghana’s government to promote digital inclusion and online safety, following a meeting in Accra. The delegation, led by Tokunbo Ibrahim, TikTok’s West Africa Policy Lead, met Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George to align with Ghana’s digital goals.

The partnership supports Ghana’s “One Million Coders” program, launched in April 2025, to train youth in digital skills. With 81% of Ghanaians over 16 using TikTok monthly, the platform will promote STEM content to engage young learners. Minister George urged TikTok to ensure fair pay for local creators and strengthen child safety measures.

TikTok committed to working with Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority to fight misinformation and enhance platform safety. Ibrahim highlighted new tools, like in-app helplines and a meditation feature, introduced at a Johannesburg summit on June 26, to support user well-being across Africa, including Ghana.

George proposed a Ghana-specific content moderation team to protect the digital space and a training boot camp for creators to boost economic opportunities. The collaboration aims to grow Ghana’s digital economy while ensuring a safe online environment for youth.

This partnership builds on TikTok’s efforts in Africa, including a $2.3 million mental health fund expansion. As Ghana pushes for digital transformation, the collaboration could empower young Ghanaians with skills and safer online spaces, with plans for further talks to finalize details.
