The 2024 Greater Accra Handball Open Championship concluded with Ghana Prisons and Ghana Army emerging victorious in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively. The tournament, held at the Prisons Handball Court, marked a significant milestone in the region’s handball history.

League Revamp

In a post-tournament press conference, Chairman Rama Kudolo announced groundbreaking developments in the league structure. Notably, a civilian team broke the dominance of perennial finalists by reaching the men’s finals for the first time.

New League Format

Kudolo unveiled plans for a new league format, comprising A and B leagues, aligned with International Handball Federation (IFH) standards. The A league, featuring top-tier talent, will be hosted at the state-of-the-art Borteyman Sports Complex.

Promoting Professionalism

To promote professionalism and accountability, strict measures will be enforced, including potential relegation for indiscipline. Despite financial challenges, Kudolo emphasized the need for corporate sponsorship and stakeholder support to uplift and sustain handball in the region.

New Season Ahead

The 2024 Greater Accra Handball League is set to commence on May 16, marking the beginning of an exciting new era in the region’s handball history.
