Police Officer Allegedly Shoots Driver Dead at Ashanti Region Checkpoint.

A tragic incident unfolded at the Akwasiso Police Barrier in Manso Adubia, Ashanti Region, on Thursday, April 4, 2024, when a police officer reportedly shot a driver dead without apparent cause. The victim, a man in his mid-thirties whose name remains undisclosed, was driving a Kia vehicle with two passengers when the shooting occurred.

Eyewitness Account and Police Response

An eyewitness, preferring anonymity, revealed that a minor altercation occurred between the driver and the policeman stationed at the checkpoint. Following a brief exchange of words, the situation appeared to have calmed down, and the driver proceeded on his journey with the passengers.

Tragically, as the Kia drove away from the checkpoint, the policeman allegedly fired a shot, fatally hitting the driver in the head. The victim’s body was swiftly taken to the Agroyesum Hospital morgue for preservation and further examination, while the Kia was impounded by the police.

The suspect, the policeman responsible for the shooting, was promptly arrested by his colleagues and is currently in custody, cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

Response from the Inspector General of Police

Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), expressed his condolences to the deceased’s wife and family. He assured them of a thorough investigation into the incident to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.

“The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has detained a police officer for an alleged fatal shooting incident which occurred on April 4, 2024, at Manso Adubia in the Ashanti Region,” a statement from the Ghana Police Service Facebook page announced.

The IGP personally reached out to the deceased’s family and dispatched a high-level police delegation to offer condolences and support during this difficult time. The investigation into the incident is ongoing to ensure justice is served.
