Trial for Two Manet Police Station Escapees Scheduled for January 27
An Accra Circuit Court has scheduled the trial of two remand prisoners, Pius Anundoabil Ayoma, 23, and Godwin Klu, 26, for January 27, 2025. The accused are charged with conspiracy to escape lawful custody and causing unlawful damage after allegedly attempting to break out of the Manet Police Station cells.
The trial date was set following the prosecution’s completion of all necessary disclosures. The prosecution, led by DSP Maxwell Oppong, plans to present three witnesses during the proceedings. Both accused have pleaded not guilty to the charges before the presiding judge, Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah.
According to the prosecution, Ayoma was held on charges of robbery, attempted murder, and rape, while Klu faced theft charges and was serving a four-year sentence. The accused reportedly damaged burglar bars, wire mesh, and a mosquito net in their escape attempt on March 2, 2023. Klu failed to escape due to his size, while Ayoma managed to flee with Klu’s assistance.
Ayoma was recaptured on May 4, 2023, in a hideout between Shukura and Afienya following intelligence operations by the National Investigation Bureau and Ghana Police Service. During interrogation, Ayoma admitted to the escape attempt in a caution statement.
