The National Union of Tricycle Operators Ghana (NUTOG) has appealed to organized labour to push for the integration of union structures in formalizing the tricycle industry.
This call was made by the General Secretary, Mr. Hamza Hafiz, during the Annual National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the General Transport, Petroleum, and Chemical Workers Union (GTPCWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) on Thursday, 16th January, 2025, in Accra.
Mr. Hafiz emphasized that legalizing and regulating tricycle operations would create safer roads and open up opportunities for operators to contribute to the national economy through tax compliance.
He stressed the importance of union solidarity in pushing for policies that benefit members and the broader economy.
“The tricycle industry has become a lifeline for many young Ghanaians, providing jobs and a vital mode of transportation,” Mr. Hafiz said. “However, the lack of proper regulation exposes both operators and the public to unnecessary risks.” He added.
NUTOG is seeking support from organized labour to champion the legalization and regulation of “pragya” (tricycle) operations in Ghana.
The union believes that recognizing the tricycle industry as a legitimate contributor to Ghana’s development would have a positive impact on the economy.
NUTOG was ably represented by the General Secretary Hamza Hafiz, National Treasurer Mutawakil Fuseni, and Northern Regional Chairman Aminu Alhassan.
