The United States Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has offered $100,000 (1.1 million Ghana cedis) in aid to over 31,000 individuals who were displaced by recent flooding in the Volta Region of Ghana. This assistance will aid the relief efforts of the Government of Ghana, aiming to save lives, alleviate suffering, and initiate recovery in the affected region.

Madam Virginia Palmer, U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, announced this support during the launch of the U.S. Global Water Strategy Plan for Ghana in Accra. She mentioned that they are working with the World Food Program to assist those most in need. The aid includes chlorine concentrate for disinfecting communal latrines and drainage canals, with collaborative efforts involving the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and local governments.

Additionally, the USAID provided local residents with 175,000 tablets of Aqua tabs to treat and purify 3.5 million liters of drinking water, helping to prevent waterborne diseases in the flood-affected areas.

The United States is Ghana’s largest bilateral development partner, with bilateral assistance totaling over $150 million in 2022. These funds are dedicated to various sectors, including health, economic growth, agriculture, education, governance, and security.
