USAID empowering regional peace councils for local conflict resolution
The US government, through the US Agency for International Development (USAID), has donated two 2016 Nissan Pathfinders to the National Peace Council. This donation will significantly aid in the promotion of peace and stability in Northern Ghana. The mobility that these vehicles will provide the Northern and Savannah Regional Peace Councils will enable them to mediate local conflicts more effectively and offer crucial training in alternative dispute resolution. These cars will fulfil a vital function in this regard.
The vehicles, handed over in Tamale, Northern Region, symbolize a collaborative effort to prevent, manage, and resolve conflicts while nurturing social unity and sustainable peace in the region. Kimberly A. Rosen, USAID Mission Director, underscored the significance of this partnership during the handover ceremony, emphasizing the fruitful collaboration between USAID, the National Peace Council (NPC), and the regional Peace Councils.
“USAID is committed to promoting peace in Northern Ghana. Through our joint efforts, we’ve been strengthening local communities and traditional authorities, promoting social cohesion, and preventing conflict. The work of the Northern Regional Peace Council, in collaboration with the Dagbon Traditional Council, is a testament to our dedication to peace and development in this region,” said Rosen at the handover.
Rosen highlighted the commitment of USAID to promoting peace in Northern Ghana, stressing the organization’s dedication to strengthening local communities, traditional authorities, and social cohesion through collaborative initiatives. The donation aligns with the strategic objectives of the U.S. Government’s Strategy to Prevent Conflict and Promote Stability (SPCPS).
The efforts supported by USAID extend beyond vehicle donations, encompassing the enhancement of the capacity of local and traditional authorities, fostering resilience and social cohesion, and promoting locally-led solutions to conflict and violence prevention. The collaboration between the Northern Regional Peace Council and the Dagbon Traditional Council serves as a prime example of this commitment.
Rosen pointed out the tangible outcomes of this collaborative effort, citing the revision of the Dagbon constitution from 1930. This initiative has fortified traditional governance and provided a roadmap for chieftaincy succession in the Dagbon Traditional Area. The collaboration not only addresses immediate conflict resolution needs but also lays the foundation for long-term stability and development.
The donation of these vehicles marks a pivotal moment in the pursuit of peace in Northern Ghana, reflecting the tangible impact of international partnerships and a shared commitment to building resilient and harmonious communities.
