University of Ghana Urges Caution Amid Rising COVID Cases

The University of Ghana’s Health Services Directorate issued an urgent alert on June 24, 2025, warning of a COVID-19 resurgence on its campuses. The notice, prompted by suspected and confirmed cases in nearby areas, calls for students, staff, and visitors to wear masks and follow safety rules to curb the spread.

The university reinstated mandatory mask-wearing in crowded areas like lecture halls and offices. Handwashing stations and sanitizers are being placed across campuses, and those feeling unwell are urged to stay home. The alert follows reports of rising cases globally, with Ghana’s low vaccination rates raising concerns about a new wave.

Dr. Gordon Abekah-Nkrumah, head of the Health Directorate, said the measures aim to protect the campus community as lectures continue. The university is working with the Ghana Health Service to monitor the situation and may tighten rules if cases increase. Testing and vaccination drives are also planned on campus.

The warning comes after a period of low COVID-19 cases in Ghana, with restrictions eased in 2024. However, the global surge, especially in China, has prompted caution. The university stressed that vaccines remain the best defense and urged everyone to get vaccinated or boosted.

As the academic year progresses, the University of Ghana is pushing for compliance to avoid disruptions. The alert has sparked renewed focus on public health, with hopes that early action will keep the campus safe from a major outbreak.
