Ukrainian football legend Shevchenko headlines celebration of sports and humanity at Gentleman Award

In a splendid return to tradition following a brief excursion into the digital realm for two years, the 28th edition of the Gentleman Award took place at the Military School Teulie in Milan. Celebrated on September 13, this event not only recognised individuals for their unwavering commitment to fair play, integrity, and professionalism both on and off the field but also served as a beacon of hope by raising funds for several humanitarian causes. Among the beneficiaries were the Fondazione Milan, Fondazione Pupi, and In Campo con il Cuore.

“Like in sports. This school instils the principles of loyalty and responsibility, all the noble principles that we are celebrating here tonight, an important asset for these young girls. We can say that we share a lot with this award, and we are happy to have it here,” said the Military School Commander, Colonel Gianluigi D’Ambrosio.

HONOURING EXCEPTIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS In addition to various players from different Italian teams, the Gentleman Award ceremony also recognised key figures who have left an indelible mark on the world of sports and beyond.

AIPS President Gianni Merlo, accompanied by the Ukrainian-born actress and model Anna Safroncik, was in charge of presenting the AIPS International Gentleman award to Andriy Shevchenko, Ukrainian football legend. The awardee, an AC Milan icon, couldn’t forget the situation in his country.

“I will always return to Milan and see so many friends. My country has endured great iniquity, and I like to use my image to provide support. I thank Italy also for the football match yesterday. I want to congratulate the Ukrainian players. Furthermore, those who are fighting for peace in our country,” said Shevchenko.

DERBY PREVIEW Among the winners, several players from Inter and Milan stood out. Let’s start with the Best Inter Goal of 2022/23, which was awarded to Lautaro Martinez of Inter. For the Rossoneri, the Portuguese star Rafael Leao received the honour for the Best Goal of the Season. The Gentleman Award recognized various names: Davide Calabria for Milan, Federico Di Marco for Inter, Matteo Pessina for Monza, and Nicolò Fagioli for Juventus.

As the Milan derby is scheduled for Saturday, September 16, many questions were related to it. Milan captain Calabria responded, “The derby brings a very strong emotion, and we will give our all. We will always do it with respect. Dimarco and I have known each other for years, and we are aware of that. Furthermore, I’m almost a midfielder now.”
