The United States has officially withdrawn from the World Health Organization (WHO), effective January 22, 2026, fulfilling President Trump’s commitment made one year ago. This decision was driven by the WHO’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, lack of reform, accountability, and transparency.
The Trump administration had initiated the withdrawal process through an executive order signed on January 20, 2025, citing the WHO’s failure to contain the pandemic and its susceptibility to political influence from member states.
The US had been the WHO’s largest financial contributor, providing around 18% of its funding.
The withdrawal has sparked concerns about global health security, with experts warning that it may weaken systems and collaborations critical to detecting, preventing, and responding to health threats.
