Campus Social Events Resume with COVID-19 Protocols
The University of Ghana lifted its temporary ban on social gatherings on July 14, 2025, following a decline in COVID-19 cases on campus, as announced by the Office of Student Affairs. The restriction, imposed on June 26 due to a feared resurgence, halted events by student groups, academic departments, halls, and religious associations.
The decision, made in consultation with University Health Services and management, allows the Students’ Representative Council, the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana, the Junior Common Rooms, and religious bodies to resume programs and weekly gatherings. The university stressed continued adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols, including mask-wearing and social distancing, to prevent a reversal of gains.
The ban was part of emergency measures to curb the virus, which saw 12 student cases and 30 staff infections by June 25, 2025, prompting campus-wide testing and contact tracing. The Ghana Health Service reported no new variants, with cases linked to the Omicron strain. The university’s clinics and isolation centers managed mild cases effectively, contributing to the decline.

Authorities will continue monitoring the situation, with the Health Services Directorate ready to reinstate restrictions if cases spike. The decision enables academic and social activities to resume, fostering community engagement while emphasizing compliance with health protocols to ensure safety across the Legon campus.
