Incident prompts commitment to safety and inclusivity.

In a disturbing incident on the University of Ghana, Legon campus, a naked young man faced assault after being mistaken for a female visitor. The university swiftly condemned the actions and reassured its commitment to safety, dignity, and inclusivity.

According to the university’s Director of Public Affairs, Dr Elizier Ameyaw-Buronyah, preliminary information suggests that the young man, dressed like a female, was initially seen in the Okponglo area. The university’s security reports indicate that he claimed to be seeking accommodation and was mistakenly assumed to be female by residents in the area.

Upon the discovery of the young man’s true gender during the night, the residents assaulted and expelled him from the accommodation. A refuse collector, unaware of the situation, intervened and transported him to a refuse collection site behind Dr Hilla Limann Hall on the campus. The following morning, upon realizing the true gender, the refuse collector also assaulted the young man, instructing him to leave the area.

The university’s security personnel were alerted by students, leading to the intervention in the matter. Both the young man and the refuse collector, neither of whom is a student of the University, have been handed over to the Legon Police for investigation.

The university’s commitment to safety, dignity, and inclusivity was reiterated, emphasizing adherence to laws preventing vexatious conduct based on various factors. The management pledged serious sanctions for any member of the university community identified to be involved in the incident.

The statement emphasized the university’s dedication to enforcing rules and regulations and its collaboration with the Ghana Police Service for a thorough investigation. The incident has prompted a renewed focus on ensuring the safety of all members of the university community and visitors on its campuses.
