The University of Ghana (UG) has officially announced the commencement of the 2024/2025 academic year, ending a prolonged strike by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) that had disrupted academic activities since September. In a notice dated October 29, 2024, UG’s Registrar, Emelia Agyei-Mensah, confirmed that lectures will resume on Monday, November 4, bringing relief to the thousands of students whose academic pursuits were put on hold.

The UTAG strike, initiated in September 2024, was part of an ongoing protest against galamsey (illegal mining) activities, which UTAG says have significant adverse effects on the environment and educational institutions in Ghana. The strike action halted academic activities across all public universities in Ghana, impacting both local and international students.

As the 2024/2025 academic year is set to begin on Thursday, October 31, UG has also released an updated academic calendar for undergraduate students to help guide them in adjusting to the new schedule. The calendar for other categories, such as graduate and diploma students, will be released soon to ensure a smooth transition back into classes.

For students who had been anxious about the potential academic delays and impacts on their education, UG’s announcement has been met with relief. The University has assured all stakeholders that comprehensive preparations are in place to ensure a seamless start to the academic year.

“We thank all stakeholders for their cooperation and wish all members of the University community a fruitful academic year,” stated Registrar Emelia Agyei-Mensah, underscoring the University’s commitment to resuming normal operations after this challenging period.
