U.S. Embassy in Ghana Issues 25,000 Visas in 2024

Ghana Sees 41% Visa Approval Rate from U.S. Embassy in 2024

In 2024, the U.S. Embassy in Ghana issued 25,000 visas out of 61,000 applications, as announced during a Consular Media Day on May 9, 2025. This reflects a 41% approval rate, indicating a stringent vetting process amid growing global migration pressures.

Consular General Elliot Fertik highlighted the embassy’s commitment to transparent visa processing while urging Ghanaians to adhere to U.S. immigration laws. “We welcome visitors for study, work, or business, but they must follow our laws,” Fertik stated, warning that illegal immigration could lead to visa refusals or permanent bans.

The data aligns with broader migration trends, as the immigrant population from sub-Saharan Africa in the U.S. grew by 52% between 2010 and 2018, according to migrationpolicy.org (2024). Ghana’s high application volume underscores strong interest in U.S. opportunities despite the challenges of securing a visa.

Fertik also noted ongoing efforts to improve the visa application experience, saying, “We want Ghanaians to understand the proper way to apply and what’s expected.” The embassy aims to balance facilitating legal travel with protecting U.S. borders, a dual mission it continues to prioritize.
