VP Bawumia Reiterates Commitment to Cultural and Religious Values Amidst Ongoing Legislative Debates.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has recently reiterated his strong opposition to LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana, emphasizing the alignment of his stance with both cultural norms and religious teachings. Speaking at the Kumasi Central Mosque during Eidul-Fitr prayers, Dr. Bawumia underscored that his position reflects the views of Ghanaian society and the Islamic faith.

Dr. Bawumia clarified that he neither supports nor condones LGBTQ practices, highlighting the clear disapproval of such activities in Ghanaian culture. He emphasized that his religious beliefs, rooted in Islam, unequivocally reject homosexuality as outlined in the Holy Quran. The Vice President left no room for ambiguity, stating that his stance against LGBTQ practices remains unwavering and will persist should he assume the presidency.

The reaffirmation of Dr. Bawumia’s stance comes amidst ongoing debates surrounding the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill passed by Parliament earlier this year. The bill, if signed into law, would impose strict penalties on individuals promoting or engaging in homosexual activities in Ghana.

However, President Akufo-Addo has yet to sign the bill into law, citing legal challenges at the Supreme Court. The delay in enacting the bill has fueled discussions and calls for clarity on the government’s position regarding LGBTQ+ rights in the country.

Dr. Bawumia’s statements during the Eidul-Fitr prayers serve as a resolute declaration of his commitment to upholding Ghanaian cultural values and religious principles. The Vice President’s unwavering stance against LGBTQ practices reflects broader societal sentiments and sets the tone for future discussions and decisions regarding LGBTQ+ rights in Ghana.
