895 Candidates’ Results Cancelled for Malpractice
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) released the 2025 BECE provisional results on August 25, 2025, notifying 718 candidates of subject result cancellations and 177 of full result cancellations due to exam irregularities. Additionally, the results of 93 candidates are withheld pending investigation.
WAEC’s PRO, John Kapi, expressed disappointment over the persistent occurrence of malpractices despite stakeholder engagements, citing the possession of phones by candidates and the failure of invigilators to enforce rules. Notifications will reach affected candidates via headmasters starting August 25, impacting 1.4 million examinees.
The irregularities, including foreign materials, reflect weak invigilation and parental oversight, per Kapi. He urged schools and counselors to improve vigilance. The cancellations, affecting 0.06% of candidates, align with WAEC’s 2024 report, noting a 5% rise in BECE malpractices.
First-year SHS students, both single-track and transitional, are to report on October 18, 2025. WAEC’s actions aim to uphold exam integrity, with schools tasked to counsel students and parents to prevent future violations, ensuring fairness in Ghana’s education system.
The council is collaborating with the Ghana Education Service to address the issue, urging stricter invigilation protocols. Affected candidates may appeal through their schools, as WAEC reinforces measures to safeguard the credibility of the 2025 BECE results.
