Death Toll Rises to Seven in Walewale Bus Attack
The death toll from the brutal attack on a bus in Walewale has increased to seven, following the deaths of four more victims, including one Burkinabe and three Togolese nationals.
The attack occurred on Friday, February 14, when gunmen ambushed the bus, opened fire on passengers, and set the vehicle ablaze. Initially, three people, including a toddler, were reported dead, but additional casualties were later confirmed.
The burned bus, with registration number GR 7501-21, had departed from Pulukoom in the Pusiga District but broke down near Loagri, close to a police barrier. While the driver left for Tamale to find a mechanic, the bus remained under police watch, with passengers waiting.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers stormed the area, firing at the passengers and police officers, forcing everyone to flee. Several victims were shot, and the bus was set on fire.
Initially, three bodies were found burned beyond recognition, but on Saturday, February 15, another victim was discovered in the charred vehicle. One person admitted to Walewale Hospital also succumbed to injuries.
In the early hours of Sunday, February 16, two more injured victims transferred to Tamale Teaching Hospital were confirmed dead, raising the total fatalities to seven.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the attack, with security agencies working to identify the perpetrators and their motives.
