Wanderlust Ghana has suspended its ambitious 30,000-kilometer Cross-Country Overland Expedition after two of its vehicles were identified as stolen during border checks in the Republic of The Congo.
The vehicles, a 2016 Lexus RX 350 and a 2018 Toyota Tacoma, were flagged as stolen from Canada in 2019 and 2022, respectively. Both vehicles were handed over to security officials in Congo for investigation. A third vehicle, a Ford F150 Raptor, has been shipped back to Ghana from Pointe-Noir.
Wanderlust Ghana emphasized that the cars were purchased in Accra after conducting thorough due diligence, including Carfax verifications, which showed clean records at the time of purchase. The group has notified law enforcement in Ghana and Canada and pledged full cooperation with the investigation.
Legal action will be pursued against the sellers of the vehicles, the club confirmed. This incident underscores a growing issue of stolen vehicles from North America being sold in Ghana, prompting the club to partner with U.S. and Canadian diplomatic missions in Ghana for an awareness campaign to educate the public on avoiding stolen vehicles.
Despite the setback, the expedition successfully covered 28,811 kilometers across 28 countries in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, promoting Ghana’s tourism potential. The team expressed gratitude to partners, Ghanaian diplomatic missions, and diaspora communities for their support during the journey.
Wanderlust Ghana plans to resume its expedition with a new set of vehicles and remains committed to future adventures, showcasing Ghana’s cultural and tourism potential.
