Students at Jasikan College of Education, situated in the Oti region, have voiced vehement grievances concerning the subpar and insufficient meals provided to them daily.

Expressing deep dissatisfaction with the quality of food served since the commencement of the academic year, students have highlighted the absence of essential accompaniments such as sugar, milk, and bread to accompany their meals, particularly porridge.

In an unprecedented move, the students initiated a protest to address the persistent issue of unsatisfactory sustenance. However, tensions escalated as clashes occurred between the protesting students and law enforcement officers.

In a recent interview with Freeman Zokha, the President of the Student’s Representative Council (SRC), during his appearance on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, he shed light on the dire situation. Zokha revealed that a sum of GH¢51 has been deducted from their monthly allowances, purportedly to supplement the allocated feeding grants.

Zokha emphasized the students’ discontent with the prevailing breakfast regimen, lamenting the absence of essential components like sugar, bread, and groundnut. He cited instances of receiving unpalatable and fermented porridge since the academic year’s outset. The protest, which unfolded on a Tuesday morning, transcended the food issue and also addressed concerns about disconnected lighting in the female dormitories.

In response to the students’ plight, Zokha refuted the notion of abolishing the meal provision entirely, asserting the necessity of a rectification rather than elimination.

The students’ unwavering demand for enhanced nutritional standards has drawn attention to their predicament, casting a spotlight on the need for immediate intervention by the institution’s management. As discussions and negotiations continue, the college is under increasing pressure to improve the quality of meals and address the broader concerns raised by the student body
