What is ‘RED’ Drug? The New Addiction on the Rise in Ghana’s Ghettos
A growing number of young people in Ghana are falling victim to a dangerous opioid drug known as “RED”, which is causing severe health and social issues. The drug, made primarily of high-dose tramadol, is illegal but widely available in urban ghettos. Hence the term ‘Wo nim red?’
Dr. George, a Doctor of Pharmacy, warned that RED significantly lowers testosterone levels, making it particularly harmful for men. He added that many users are unaware of the drug’s long-term effects.

Despite its dangers, RED remains popular among youth seeking an energy boost. Some users claim it increases strength and endurance, but experts warn that its addictive nature can destroy lives.
With the rise in addiction, calls for government intervention, stricter drug laws, and more job opportunities are increasing. Many believe that unemployment and poverty are key factors driving young people into drug abuse.
