The Theodosia Okoh Hockey Pitch in Accra was the center of excitement and youthful talent as Yaa Asantewaa Girls Senior High School and Adisadel College won the maiden edition of the Senior High School Hockey Championship on Sunday, November 9, 2025.
The three-day championship, themed “Unearthing the Next Generation,” was organized by the Ghana Hockey Association in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service and the Ghana National Council of Private Schools. The event brought together 15 boys’ teams and 13 girls’ teams from the Western, Central, Eastern, Ashanti, Volta, and Greater Accra Regions to compete for top honours from November 7–9, 2025.
The championship attracted dignitaries, including the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Richard Akpokavie, and President of the Ghana Hockey Association, Ben K.D. Asante, alongside former and current national hockey players, old students, tutors, parents, and sports enthusiasts.
In the girls’ final, Yaa Asantewaa Girls SHS faced St. Francis SHS in a tightly contested match that ended goalless in regulation time. The “Adehye” girls held their nerve in the penalty shootout to lift the trophy.
In the boys’ division, Adisadel College (Adisco) displayed dominance, defeating Prempeh College by 2–0 to walk away as champions. Kumasi Girls SHS and Opoku Ware School secured bronze in the girls’ and boys’ categories, respectively.
Addressing the gathering during the closing ceremony, the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, praised the organizers for their initiative in developing youth hockey talent. “I am proud of what I have witnessed today. Seeing young students compete with passion and discipline gives hope for the future of Ghana hockey. For participating alone, each of you is a champion. I look forward to seeing more schools join in the next edition,” he said. He encouraged the student-athletes to balance education and sports, drawing inspiration from former students who have represented the nation.
The President of the Ghana Hockey Association, Ben K.D. Asante also commended the schools, coaches, and volunteers. “This event marks a significant step toward building the next generation of hockey stars. Keep training hard, respect the game, and take your academics seriously. We anticipate an even bigger championship next year,” he stated.
The Championship Coordinator, Isaac Graham, in his vote of thanks, acknowledged sponsors, partners, and individuals who contributed to the success of the event. “This is only the beginning. We are encouraged by the turnout and performance of the schools. We hope to secure more sponsorship and support next year so we can expand participation. We are committed to unearthing the next generation of hockey talents,” he noted.
The Minister also made a personal but undisclosed presentation to the winners.

All participating schools received 5 hockey sticks, certificates, and products from sponsors. The winners received medals and trophy.
