Four Arrested, One Escapes in School Riot Probe
Upper East Regional Minister Donatus Akamugri Atanga ordered the indefinite closure of Zuarungu Senior High School in Bolgatanga East District on July 20, 2025, after violent clashes between Frafra and Kusasi students over an alleged mobile phone theft escalated into a brawl, with school structures set ablaze. Four students were arrested, but one escaped during transport to the police station, allegedly seizing a police officer’s magazine.

The incident, rooted in ethnic tensions, prompted police and military deployment to escort Bawku students home to prevent reprisals. Regional Security Council’s rapid response included coordinating with Bolgatanga, Zamse, Kongo, and Gambigo SHS for safe evacuation. One student sustained a forehead injury, but no fatalities were reported, per YEN.com.gh. Investigations continue to address the unrest and prevent further violence.

The clash reflects broader regional tensions, with Bawku’s Kusasi-Mamprusi conflict spilling into schools. A similar 2019 clash at Kongo SHS and February 2025 bullying at Zuarungu SHS highlight recurring ethnic and disciplinary issues. The Ghana Education Service is urged to implement conflict resolution programs. The school, with over 1,000 students, remains closed until safety is assured.

Community leaders, including Peter Apuko Awuni of CCCLaD, called for closer supervision and systemic education reforms to address ethnic divides. The closure disrupts learning, with fears of delayed WASSCE exams, though GES assures contingency plans, as seen in Nkwanta SHS’s 2025 closure after ethnic violence killed three students. Authorities are working to restore calm and prevent escalation.
