CETAG Embarks on Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Agreements
The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has announced an indefinite strike starting Thursday, January 2, 2025. The decision was made during an Emergency National Council meeting held on December 30, 2024, following months of unresolved grievances with the government.
In a statement issued on December 31, CETAG cited the government’s continuous violation of agreements and roadmaps concerning a compulsory arbitration award issued by the National Labour Commission (NLC) in May 2023. Despite earlier strike notices served on September 26 and December 23, 2024, the NLC failed to address CETAG’s concerns.
CETAG members have vowed not to return to their duties, which include teaching, supervising project work, and macro-teaching, until their full payments are made. “This action is in accordance with Section 159 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651),” CETAG stated, emphasizing that no official duties will resume until all outstanding payments are settled.
The strike highlights ongoing tensions between CETAG and the government, with the union demanding accountability and adherence to signed agreements. The action disrupts academic activities at colleges of education across Ghana, placing pressure on stakeholders to find a resolution.
CETAG’s indefinite strike underscores a broader need for labor dispute reforms and government compliance to avoid disruptions in Ghana’s educational sector.
