Energy Minister-Designate Orders ECG to Halt Supplier Payments

John Jinapor, Ghana’s Minister-Designate for Energy, has issued a directive to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to cease all payments to suppliers as part of efforts to address inefficiencies and stabilize the power sector.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on January 9, 2025, Jinapor highlighted ECG’s significant revenue losses, which he attributed to inefficiencies, including the inability to monitor over 70 separate accounts.

“The challenge stems from inefficiencies. ECG loses over 40% of power generated, while other countries lose only 2-4%. If $100 worth of power is sold but only 60% is recovered, no system can thrive under such conditions,” he explained.

Jinapor emphasized that the directive, backed by the Chief of Staff, is aimed at creating financial buffers and ensuring better control of ECG’s finances. He warned ECG’s finance directorate of serious consequences for non-compliance.

“All supplier payments must stop immediately. Failure to adhere to this directive will result in severe repercussions,” he cautioned.

The Minister-Designate pledged comprehensive reforms, including the closure of ECG’s numerous accounts, to enhance operational efficiency and stabilize Ghana’s electricity supply.
