Two Invigilators, Supervisor Arrested For Exam Malpractice

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) arrested two invigilators and one supervisor for helping students cheat during the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in Ghana. Txre confirmed on June 11, 2025, as the exams began, signaling a crackdown on malpractice.

John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, told Channel One TV that the three were caught using mobile phones to assist students at exam centers. They allegedly snapped photos of question papers and shared them online, breaking strict WAEC rules. The culprits were handed over to the police for further action.

The incident occurred despite WAEC’s efforts to ensure a fair process, with most exam centers running smoothly. Kapi noted that such cheating undermines the credibility of the BECE, which tests junior high students before they enter senior high school. The arrested officials face possible charges and job loss.

WAEC has tightened security, banning phones in exam halls and urging invigilators to follow rules. The council is working with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to punish those involved. Last year, 18 teachers were arrested for similar offenses, showing the ongoing challenge of exam cheating.

With over 600,000 students taking the 2025 BECE, WAEC is determined to protect the exam’s integrity. The arrests serve as a warning to others, as authorities push for honest assessments to support Ghana’s education system.
