During the vetting process of the Member of Parliament for the Asuogyaman Constituency, Thomas Ampem, a significant disclosure emerged. While questioned by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin on February 24, Ampem admitted to not completing the compulsory National Service as mandated by Ghana National Service Scheme Act, 1980 (Act 426).
Under Act 426, Section 7(1), citizens of Ghana must complete a one-year National Service to obtain employment, with specific exemptions allowed under Section 8. The Scheme, started in 1973, aims to foster national spirit and combat social issues like hunger and unemployment, especially in rural areas. It remains uncertain if Ampem was exempted, as the Minority Leader did not delve deeper into this aspect.
This revelation has raised questions regarding compliance with national laws and the implications for Ampem’s political career. As the debate continues, the focus remains on the importance of National Service in nation-building and the legal frameworks that uphold it.
