Newborn Rescued During Dangerous Atlantic Crossing to Spain
A heart-stopping photo released by Spain’s Maritime Rescue Service has captured the moment a newborn baby was rescued from a crowded rubber dinghy making a perilous Atlantic crossing to Spain’s Canary Islands. The baby, born at sea, lay naked on belongings as migrants, bundled in winter jackets, risked their lives to reach Europe.
The rescue occurred on Epiphany Day, January 6, when the crew of the Guardamar Talía lifeboat found the boat filled with men, women, and the baby’s presumed mother, all crammed tightly. This marks yet another desperate attempt by African migrants to cross the treacherous waters in search of a better life.

The Canary Islands, located just 95 km from Morocco, saw over 46,000 irregular sea arrivals in 2024, according to Spain’s Interior Ministry. Tragically, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that over 5,000 migrants have died on this route since 2014. However, Caminando Fronteras, a Spanish migrant rights group, reports that the toll exceeded 10,000 deaths or disappearances last year alone.
Domingo Trujillo, the captain of the rescue ship, previously led a similar rescue in 2020 involving a baby born at sea. His efforts reflect the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the immense risks migrants face on their journey to Europe.
This harrowing incident underscores the urgent need for international cooperation to address the root causes of migration and ensure safe, legal pathways for those fleeing danger.
